I'm still letting it sink in. After hundreds of applicants, 20 finalists were chosen for the Boston Bruins Ice girls tryouts. Of those 20 girls only FOUR were chosen to join the Ice girls, as they had many girls from last season returning. And for some reason I was one of the chosen FOUR!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!! I was so excited when they called my name! I was sure I wouldn't make it, once I realized they were only picking four girls. There were so many beautiful well qualified girls there, anybody could have made it. It was a long 5 hour process, which made the moment they announced my name even sweeter. To know that all of my studying, dance classes, and preperation had paid off!!!
The ice girls get a decent amount of exposure in Boston, and that's pretty cool, but not really the main reason why I tried out. Not only do I love the Bruins, but this was a huge deal for me!!!! Growing up, I was pretty much as awkward as awkward gets. Skinny, huge glasses, braces, frizzy hair, ect. But then around 15-16 I realized how to use a flat iron. At 18-19 I started really getting into fashion. I had already been experimenting with make-up, but I finally got it perfected around 20-21. For many it may seem superficial, but a cute outfit, and a little make-up can go a long way for a girl's self esteem. While I think it's always important to try to be beautiful on the inside, there is nothing wrong with treating yourself, and wanting the outside to match too :-)
So for all the girls that got picked on, ignored by the cute guy, and shunned by the "popular" girls....you can do it!!!!!!! It may sound corny, but don't give any of the nay-sayers a second thought. Prove them wrong with your actions, by working hard and becoming successful.
I'm sure if you told the girls I went to middle school with that I would grow up to be a professional cheerleader, (OK, so NHL cheerleading may not be as big as NFL or NBA, but still!!!) they would laugh in your face! But who has the last laugh now? ;-)
